Dirt is magic. Apply liberally. If there is no ring around the tub at the end of the day, you are doing it wrong. Please use your outside voice. Run. Look UP. Throw things. It’s ok to get hurt sometimes. You can jump much higher than you think. You will never know what is under rocks unless you look. Some trees are not for climbing, but most are. Dig lots of holes. We can always fill them up later. Bushes make great hiding places. Every hill needs a kid to roll down it once in a while. Leaves of three, let it be. Tell someone if they have a bee on them. Last, but not least- Bedtime will be delayed on account of beautiful weather.
Those rules are good to live by. Now if I can only get my oldest interested in outdoor activities.
Are there activities your eldest does enjoy that might translate to things that can be done outside? My guys love to build things, so they spend a lot of time with their toy earth movers in the dirt. I loved to read, so I spent a lot of time in the shade with a lawn chair… it wasn’t very physically active, but I WAS outside.
I am so glad that the spring/summer weather has finally arrived to my neck of the woods. We stayed outside way past bedtime last night even though it was a school night…it was delicious
lol I love your rules! 🙂 I am so happy to see nicer weather starting to show itself! Winters always feel so long here in Canada
We felt like spring would never come this year. Then we hit 90 degrees on our first really warm day! Fortunately, next week is going to be milder.

I Love this article!! My kids are on school vacation this week and it has been nice out. Last night my 8 year old who goes to bed at 7pm went to a 7:30 movie (we walked because it is a small place here in town) she went to bed at 10pm today we were all over the place enjoying the nice weather, she got rainbow temp colors for her hair that wash out in the shower. We did that went all over the place then we had a fire in the backyard where we made smores. She got to see the big dipper and the little dipper. Let’s just say another night of late bedtime. She was so tired shower has to wait till morning but it is so fun!! Thanks for this wonderful article
