This is why smart mothers order their children’s Halloween costumes early. It’s so there’s time to organize a stand in, in case your kid takes an irrational dislike to all costumes everywhere, just in time to try it on. My little dude had better hope that his stunt double doesn’t steal his costume, because, um HELLO? CUTE!
I have a two-pronged shopping strategy for Halloween costumes. I either wait until the last minute to prevent mind changing, or start really early organizing a super special costume, so there’s plenty of time to get bored of it or destroy it before the big night. As a result, I’ve more or less decided that all future costumes need to be things that make a good addition to our permanent dress-up collection. Besides, where’s the fun in only wearing it once? Much better to have one that can stand up to being worn to the grocery store, preschool, to sleep in, and at formal occasions.
I’m glad to tell you that this dragon (NO. DINOSAUR. okay, how about versatile?) costume is up to the job. The sturdy cape is fully lined and closes with a velcro tab. (Not a flimsy tie or a hard to work snap- just a nice, well sewn tab that holds it on, but will come undone easily if the cape gets caught on something.) The mits have a slit opening with a little pocket above it, so your kiddo can pick between operating the claws, or operating their hands. It’s cute with the fingers in or out, both.
The reason I selected this costume (which was provided by Halloween Adventure in exchange for my honest feedback, stunt double not included) is because the cape and mitts style is very forgiving. My kid’s costume rejection is unfortunate but expected. Since this one doesn’t cover his face, and can be easily worn over his regular clothing, I’m hoping he’ll come around in time for Halloween. Not all of our costume choices have been so fortunate. Anything that involves a hat, for instance, will be destroyed with extreme prejudice. His first Halloween pictures were blurry motion shots of him screaming and trying to escape the adorable dog costume his elder brother had loved at the same age. Speaking as a seamstress, this costume is extremely sturdy and well made. I am confident that it will stand up to a lot of vigorous play and even a few angry rages.
It also won’t impair his vision or trip him up while trick or treating or playing fun games at Halloween parties. Unless he takes flight near some aircraft and is sucked into the engines, the cape poses exactly zero injury risk, which is great. Holiday fun is more relaxing when you don’t have to worry that you’ll ruin your costume or trip over your silly shoes. It’s also machine washable, and comes in one size that fits 4-6. It does NOT fit my husband, who put it on hoping to turn the tide on the NOPE part of the program., but un-helpfully refused to be photographed.

As well he should, since he rocked it like a pro, and it looked darling on him. 🙂
