I’ve always struggled with card shopping for Father’s Day. Sentimental isn’t really my style, but apparently it is the default mode for Father’s Day cards. I have resorted- many, many times- to the “blank inside” section, because it was the only place I could find one without a trite list of virtues which may or may not describe my particular Father. (I have an awesome Dad, by the way. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned, but there’s never been anything he couldn’t explain. He has a wonderful way of just understanding people that he inherited from the Wise and Wonderful Betty Gray, and he has always set a good example in a variety of ways. The treacly cards that implied that he did a great job mowing the lawn and taking us to baseball games were eye rollers on multiple levels.)
As for my own husband and the father of my children-well. Sarcasm is kind of the native language around here. Sentimentality would probably come across as satire. He’d rather have the remote for the day than a lengthy reflection on how he makes us feel. (No worries, babe, I’m with you on this one. I’ll put fresh batteries in.)
I’d like to take this opportunity to wish a Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads, Dads-to-Be, Grandpas, godfathers, and especially to all those who have stood in the place of an absent father. Last, but not least, families are complicated. So I’d like to wish a Good Day to those of you who feel conflicted or downright awful on Father’s Day. Happy Ides of June or Tire Rotation Day or Netflix Marathon With Ice Cream Day. Have the day you have.
That said, here is my personal collection of Father’s Day cards in a language we all understand. Click each one for a printable PDF. They print on standard letter paper and are half fold. You can get envelopes for this size at an office supply store.
My sister and my dad always had this thing when we were kids. It was a game to pick at one another. I always gave the nice birthday card and she always gave the “NASA called because they mistook your cake for a solar flare” card. Thanks for sharing these!
Sounds like your sister and I would get along. 🙂 Thanks for visiting!
There are so many lawn/tool/golf type cards out there that are funny — but they don’t really fit my husband’s interests either. It’s tough to get a good card for this holiday.
