If you haven’t heard about it already, the Teal Pumpkin Project by FARE is a project to encourage offering food-free treats at Halloween to make this holiday safer (and therefore more FUN) for the 1 in 13 kids with food allergies. Food allergies can be life threatening or cause serious illnesses. Halloween is a holiday that is entirely built on unfettered access to all kinds of usually restricted foods. But for a kid with a food allergy, this is anything but a “treat.”
To keep this holiday from playing terrible tricks on kids who just want to enjoy it like everyone else, FARE encourages keeping a supply of non-food treats on hand, SEPARATE from the food treats. (This is important! Cross contamination is totally a dangerous thing.) You can find our free printable Teal Pumpkin poster and a list of suggested food-free treat ideas here, or get more resources from FARE.
There are also some nice Teal Pumpkin display items available on Amazon now. I am ordering some of the leaf bags for my yard, to let families with food allergies know they should add my house to their route. Here’s to a safe and happy Halloween for all, with no “tricks!”
